Danish partnership will produce green aviation fuel with new technology

A number of companies have joined forces to use a new technology that, from 2024, will make it faster and cheaper to produce aviation fuel based on electricity from renewable sources.

Plans to start production of green aviation fuel (Sustainable Aviation Fuel – SAF) are well underway in Denmark. Aalborg Airport, Kosan Gas, Vertimass, Aalborg University, Hydrogen Valley, Port of Aalborg and European Energy have joined forces to use a new technology that will make it faster and cheaper to produce aviation fuel based on electricity from renewable sources.

The project is expected to lay the foundation for the establishment of a plant that can produce green aviation fuel in 2024 and supply the first domestic route in Denmark. The project, named MeSAF, is part of the partners' ambition to contribute to a green transition in the aviation sector and prepare the initiatives under ReFuel EU, according to a press release.

The technology behind MeSAF presents a simplification of the process of converting methanol into aviation fuel, which, in contrast to existing technologies, only requires a single step. The American company Vertimass has developed the catalyst in the new technology. Together with the Danish European Energy, the production of kerosene with the new technology will initially be tested in the USA. A demonstration plant will then be established in Aalborg in 2024. The experience from that plant will form the basis for subsequently establishing a full-scale plant with a production of 10,000 tonnes per year.

- There is pressure to make air traffic green, and e-SAF represents a potential solution, but with the known technologies it is expensive and resource-intensive in terms of processing and scaling. With this new technology from Vertimass, we expect to be able to deliver a green product that is more interesting from an economic perspective, and where the ingredients in the form of wind, sun and CO2 are in principle unlimited, says Søren Knudsen Kær, Head of Technology at European Energy.

When producing aviation fuel, the gas LPG is created as a by-product. Kosan Gas will sell this as a green alternative to the liquid gas that is currently distributed.

- The collaboration on the production of green aviation fuel is the result of a strategic focus on sustainable transformation in our organization. Here, the partnership with Vertimass has been the key to realizing the green technology that the project in Aalborg requires. With the green gas that we will be able to produce, we can, among other things, help companies that want to increase their security of supply with a green energy solution. As the production of sustainable aviation fuel grows, we expect to be able to deliver correspondingly larger quantities of green liquid gas to our customers, says Jannik Brokær Lund, Commercial Manager, Kosan Gas Nordic.

The total budget for the MeSAF project is DKK 18,363,000. Of this, EUDP has granted DKK 9,715,300 in support.
