THISTED: It has now been practically decided who will replace Thisted's mayor, Niels Jørgen Pedersen, as the Liberal Party's mayoral candidate in the next election. He announced last week that he will not run again.

The deadline for registering as a candidate has expired, and group chairman Kristian Tilsted is the only one who has registered. This happened after a meeting in the city council group, where he received full support, Viggo Madsen, chairman of the Liberal Party's municipal association, told DK Nyt.

- The group supports Kristian Tilsted, and there was agreement that they would like to avoid a contested election, he says.

Kristian Tilsted must, however, be formally elected by a majority at a nomination meeting on September 2, but since no one else is running, it is a formality.

Thisted Municipality is one of the five municipalities that is most committed to renewable energy in Denmark. Among other things, the municipality is home to one of the national test centers: Testcenter Østerild.

Group chairman for almost a year

The new mayoral candidate has served on the municipal council in Thisted since KV13 and has a seat on the business, climate, environment and technology committee. He has also been the group chairman since November last year, when he took over as part of a reshuffle after Susanne Olander left the party in favor of the Social Democrats.

He is originally a trained electrician and electrical installer and has worked as technical manager and director at Netselskabet Elværk A/S, formerly Thy-Mors Energi Elnet A/S, and sits on a few boards. He lives in Hurup with his family.

In the municipal elections, he will face, among other things, the Social Democrats' former mayor Ulla Vestergaard, who in the spring won a runoff election against her younger party colleague Mette Kjærulff by just five votes.

Ulla Vestergaard was mayor from 2018 to 2021, with the support of the Liberal Party, until she lost the post to Niels Jørgen Pedersen. Before her, Lene Kjelgaard Jensen was mayor for two terms - elected for the Liberal Party, but in 2017 she switched to the Conservative Party.

The Conservative Party chose Torben Overgaard as its mayoral candidate earlier this year. The three parties - the Social Democrats, the Liberal Party and the Conservative Party - are currently the only ones in Thisted with more than one mandate.
