As EU Commissioner for Energy and Housing, Dan Jørgensen will work to bring down energy prices.
This is what the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said in a speech to the European Parliament on Wednesday. It comes ahead of a majority in parliament expected to approve von der Leyen's second EU Commission on Wednesday.
- The biggest challenge for our companies is the high energy costs, says von der Leyen in the speech.
Here she emphasizes that Dan Jørgensen will be given an important task that will help both companies and households to lower energy costs:
- We have done a lot to respond to Russia's blackmail and the high inflation that followed it. But energy prices are still structurally too high, and they need to come down.
- Dan Jørgensen will work on this based on his previous experience, says von der Leyen.
Dan Jørgensen has, among other things, been Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities in Denmark before he was nominated for the position of Denmark's new EU Commissioner after Margrethe Vestager.
- Dan Jørgensen will work to reduce costs for households and businesses and invest in clean energy, says Ursula von der Leyen.
She also suggests that Dan Jørgensen may have an important role in how the EU will respond to Donald Trump's threats to impose tariffs on goods from the EU.
- Dan Jørgensen will also work to replace imports of Russian LNG gas. It is high time that this happens, and I know that the European Parliament will support us in this, says von der Leyen.
Donald Trump has threatened to impose additional tariffs on European goods because he believes that the EU exports an unreasonable amount more to the US than it buys from American goods.
Trump will try to tilt the trade balance more in the US's favor.
However, the EU wants to avoid harmful tariffs. That is why Ursula von der Leyen has opened the way for the EU to buy more LNG gas in the US. This will mean that the EU imports more from the US, so that the trade balance will be more in Trump's favor.
The American gas is also intended to replace Russian gas and thus make the EU finally independent of Putin's energy.
Dan Jørgensen himself has also emphasized this goal in connection with his nomination for the post of Commissioner for Energy and Housing.
