RINGKØBING-SKJERN: The Danish Democrats' member of parliament, Mads Fuglede, wants to topple Venstre from the mayoral throne in Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality.
He is running in the 2025 municipal election as a mayoral candidate for his party. If things turn out so that Fuglede is nominated as the new mayor, it will also mean a farewell to Christiansborg, he tells Ritzau.
- I am happy to be in the Danish Parliament and to represent DD in the Danish Parliament. But there is a very, very intense debate about energy policy in Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality, which makes me think I must also put my efforts into getting a new direction for it, he says.
The most important thing is to get a new course for energy policy in the municipality, emphasizes Mads Fuglede.
He will also be satisfied if he is elected to the city council as an ordinary member and at the same time continues at Christiansborg - if the energy policy course in Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality is changed.
In that case, he will be able to have a double mandate and sit both on the city council and in the Folketing.
Fuglede lives in the municipality, which is the municipality with the most renewable energy production, and in an interview with Weekendavisen he has problematized that he has had to decide on plans for solar cell plants, wind turbines and biogas plants in the local area almost every day.
Point to anyone who wants another energy policy
It is greed that drives the intentions of the energy projects, he says in the interview.
The politician wants to change that.
- Running as a mayoral candidate could be a way to do that. But I am prepared to point to almost anyone who wants to lead Ringkøbing-Skjern towards a different energy policy, says Mads Fuglede to Ritzau.
Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality has only had mayors from the Liberal Party since the structural reform in 2007. First Torben Nørregaard was mayor, then it was Iver Enevoldsen, and right now Hans Østergaard is in office.
Mads Fuglede, who is the energy, supply and climate spokesman for the Danish Democrats, himself has a past in the Liberal Party. But precisely because of the energy policy that is being pursued under the Liberal government in the municipality, he resigned, and in March he switched to the Denmark Democrats.
This will be the Denmark Democrats' first municipal election. The party was founded in 2022 by chairman Inger Støjberg.
