RINGKØBING-SKJERN: GreenGo Energy is withdrawing the majority of its applications for the new energy plants, which were to be part of the large-scale Megaton project in Ringkøbing-Skjern. The plan originally included a Power-to-X factory, 1000 hectares of solar cells and 30 wind turbines, which together were to produce 110,000 tons of e-methanol annually.

However, the project had difficult conditions in the local area, where several local politicians and many citizens were critical of the project. In Sdr. Vium and Hemmet, GreenGo Energy's announcement that the company was dropping its applications for new solar and wind farms was, for example, celebrated by raising flags in the city's flag avenue. This is reported by Ringkøbing-Skjern Dagblad

Instead, biomethanol will now be produced, which requires far fewer energy plants. GreenGo Energy announces in a press release that they are only maintaining an application for a wind turbine project with up to 12 wind turbines in Nørhede-Hjortmose. In addition, they are maintaining two already approved solar parks in Nørhede-Hjortmose and Gestenge, totaling 650 hectares.

According to the company, the change is happening because a change in regulations in the EU has allowed biomethanol produced from certified biomass to meet the requirements for advanced, green fuels. Biomethanol is less CO2-displacing than e-methanol, but on the other hand cheaper and quicker to implement in the market as a replacement for fossil fuels.

- The market has moved quickly, and we have chosen to keep up. Biomethanol gives us the opportunity to deliver a green fuel that is both economically sustainable and technically feasible with the infrastructure we already have. It is a solution that can be scaled quickly and make a real difference in the transport sector, says Anders Heine Jensen, Director of PtX and Megaton projects at GreenGo Energy.

So who has won?

The city council, which has been informed of the changed plans at a closed city council meeting, is not very surprised by the rollback of the project. KD, K, DD and NB are pleased with the news. Several emphasize that future projects in the municipality must include citizens and rural districts to a much greater extent before breaking the bank.

V, S and SF are upset, but understand the decision. Deputy Mayor Søren Elbæk (S) believes that the municipality has probably been out too early, he tells Ringkøbing-Skjern Dagblad. Although the government and the Folketing have pushed for a green transition, legislation, business models and citizen ownership of the projects have not kept up, he believes.

- I think it will be a very long time before new projects come to political consideration in Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality. And I actually don't really know who has been the winner in that relationship, he says.
