With the aim of supporting the green transition by utilizing Gas Storage Denmark's expertise in underground gas storage and Nobian Dansk Salt's experience in developing salt caverns, the two parties have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The aim of the collaboration is to investigate the development of salt caverns for energy storage in Denmark, including hydrogen storage, Energinet states in a press release.

- In a future green energy system, where a significantly larger share of production will come from variable sources such as wind and solar, the challenge of balancing the energy system will become greater. Green hydrogen produced from renewable energy sources is expected, together with hydrogen storage, to play a crucial role. Not only in terms of ensuring a stable supply of green fuels, but also in maintaining a constant balance between electricity production and consumption, says Gas Storage Denmark’s CEO, Martin Christensen.

Nobian Dansk Salt has over 60 years of expertise in salt production and extensive experience in the construction and operation of salt caverns in Denmark, is part of Nobian, which has extensive experience in energy storage solutions.

- Nobian Dansk Salt is uniquely positioned to contribute to the hydrogen infrastructure and the hydrogen economy. To build sustainable hydrogen value chains, we must promote knowledge sharing, research, technological innovation and infrastructure development. This collaboration, which is the first hydrogen storage collaboration between partners in the Netherlands and Denmark, meets the need to develop hydrogen storage solutions in Denmark, says Michael Koenig, CEO of Nobian.

By exploring the development of hydrogen storage in salt caverns together with Gas Storage Denmark, the hope is to support and fulfill Denmark's great potential for renewable energy and position the country as a leading hydrogen hub in the Nordics.
