The Avedøre A.M.B.A. energy community has received the Green Power Prize 2025 for its work in engaging citizens and local actors in the green transition in Hvidovre. The energy community won the prize in competition with Thyborøn Sydhavns Møllelaug II I/S and VE Sejersbæk. This was announced by Green Power Denmark, which, as the name suggests, is behind the prize, in a press release.

The community has, among other things, installed solar cells on house roofs, schools and a 45-meter-high apartment block. In addition, charging stations have been established, heat pumps have been installed and new solutions for storing energy have been worked on. The next step is a data center that will deliver excess heat to the district heating network, and there are plans for more solar cell systems and possibly also wind turbines.

- The green transition must not end up being a project that is controlled from above. The changes must also come from people who live next door and take responsibility together. When citizens, businesses and the municipality pull in the same direction, something really happens. The energy community in Avedøre clearly shows this, says Kristian Jensen, CEO of Green Power Denmark.

Since 2021, Avedøre A.M.B.A. has brought together residents, housing associations, businesses and utility companies around a common ambition to make Avedøre a green power center. Among the initiatives are solar cells on roofs and residential buildings, installation of charging stations and heat pumps, as well as plans for energy storage and utilization of surplus heat from a future data center.

The Avedøre energy community is the first of its kind in Denmark and has served as an inspiration for other local communities, says Green Power Denmark.

- In Avedøre, they have acted, collaborated and created solutions that work – and that inspire far beyond the municipal borders. That is why they are this year's well-deserved winner of the Green Power Prize, says Kristian Jensen.

The prize comes with 30,000 DKK, which goes to Energy Communities Denmark, which will use it to develop educational material on how to locally engage in energy communities.
