It is positive that Donald Trump announces that he will drop the announced tariffs against Europe. This is stated by Lukas Lausen, head of global trade and investment at the Confederation of Danish Industry, in a written response to Ritzau.
- I am a little cautious, however. We currently know too little to actually be able to trust what the American president is reporting, but I interpret it as the first steps in the right direction, it is said.
Lausen adds that it shows that Europe's collective voice matters. The Confederation of Danish Industry also welcomes the president's announcement, but at the same time notes the ignorance.
- It is still uncertain what an agreement entails, but if it turns out that Trump cancels the tariff, then it is extremely positive, says Jakob Ellemann-Jensen, deputy director of the Confederation of Danish Industry.
President Donald Trump announced last week that he would impose tariffs on a number of European countries that did not support his desire to take over Greenland.
On Wednesday, the president said that a framework for an agreement has been developed, and the threats of tariffs are therefore being canceled. Since his inauguration as president, Donald Trump has used tariff threats as a tool to negotiate better trade agreements for the United States.
According to Lukas Lausen of the Confederation of Danish Industry, it is important that the tax is not used as a "means of power among friends". In connection with the tariff threats, the Confederation of Danish Industry warned that it could cost thousands of Danish jobs if the EU retaliated against the tariff threats.
He emphasizes that the latest announcement must not take the pressure off Europe when it comes to competitiveness and sustainable development.
- We will have to get up to speed more quickly and strengthen our competitiveness. The EU is still too slow in becoming able to compete with China and the USA, says Lausen.
