Denmark can spin gold on green aviation transformation

The European aviation industry has downgraded its focus on hydrogen in its ambition for climate neutrality by 2050. Whereas the transition to hydrogen as a fuel was previously supposed to account for 20 percent of the total CO2 reduction in the European aviation industry, it will now only account for six percent. Instead, the industry appears to be focusing on e-SAF (electro-Sustainable Aviation Fuel), a green aviation fuel produced from renewable energy. This opens up opportunities for Denmark as a major producer of sustainable fuel. This is what Børsen writes.

- There is a good opportunity here for Denmark to become a major green fuel producer. We have the potential to produce much more in Denmark than we can consume ourselves and thus export the remainder, says Head of Power-to-X at Green Power Denmark Michael Madsen, he points out that Denmark's large resources of green electricity on land as well as at sea mean that there are good opportunities to produce e-SAF via PtX.

From 2025, the EU has introduced a requirement that two percent of all aviation fuel at EU airports must be sustainable. This figure will gradually increase to 70 percent in 2050. According to Professor Henrik Lund Frandsen from DTU, e-SAF will be the only fully scalable solution for the aviation industry, as bio-SAF has limited resources, while e-SAF can be scaled up with more wind turbines and solar cells.
