Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has become the UK's largest investor in battery storage. This comes after the Danish investment fund invested 800 million pounds, equivalent to 7.2 billion kroner, in the start-up of the construction of two new battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Scotland. This was announced by CIP in a press release.

When the two new projects are completed, they will be CIP's second and third battery projects in the UK. One of the new projects, Coalburn 2, will be located in South Lanarkshire next to CIP's existing Coalburn 1 BESS project. The other new project, Devilla, will be located in Fife near the town of Kincardine. Each project has a capacity of 500 MW and, when completed, will be Europe’s largest battery storage projects.

CIP’s BESS portfolio (Coalburn 1, Coalburn 2 and Devilla) will have a combined capacity of 1.5 GW and will be able to store and deliver a total of 3 GWh of electricity to the grid – equivalent to the electricity consumption of over 4.5 million households for a two-hour period.

“Strategically located battery storage, such as our Coalburn and Devilla projects, increases energy security, provides grid flexibility and enables faster deployment of low-cost renewable energy,” said Nischal Agarwal, Partner at CIP.

CIP’s decision on Coalburn 2 and Devilla comes approximately one year after a similar decision for Coalburn 1. Battery technology provider e-STORAGE, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar and a Tier 1 energy storage solutions provider, will supply all three projects.
