The public environmental assessment platform EA-Tools now also includes marine data, which is intended to strengthen the green transition by facilitating the work with environmental assessments at sea. This is stated by the Danish Environment Portal in a press release.

EA-Tools is a digital tool that, among others, authorities and consultants use to identify potential conflicts in connection with environmental assessments. The platform has been expanded with marine data via funding from the Danish Marine Nature Foundation through the Danish Environmental Protection Agency. This gives users the opportunity to analyze more than a hundred new datasets from both national and international sources such as EMODnet and the European Environment Agency, EEA.

- With the upgrade of EA-Tools, the Danish Environmental Protection Agency and the Danish Environment Portal are taking the first step in realizing the Danish Marine Nature Foundation's goal of developing a digital infrastructure for storing and displaying environmental data. The tool is the first step towards making it easier to carry out environmental assessments at sea, because data here can be reused across projects and actors. We are now making massive efforts to secure the ongoing and future data production. We need data to flow directly into the specialist systems so that new knowledge is utilized quickly and effectively, says Cristina Nissen, Head of Marine Nature and Water Chemistry at the Danish Environmental Protection Agency.

The think tank Hav has also contributed to the work on the upgrade. The tank's recommendations for a national digitalization program for marine data have, among other things, formed the basis for the new functions.

- We are pleased that it will be easier to share data with each other, so that decisions can be made on a higher knowledge basis. This can make the green transition more efficient and provide insight into how to take the right measures for the marine environment, says program manager Ditte Mandøe Andreasen from Think Tank Hav.

The Danish Energy Agency points out that planning for offshore wind turbines in particular has needed better access to marine environmental data.

- With marine data collected on one platform, it helps to get an overview of what challenges there may potentially be before you get started. The easier access to data, the greater the chance of getting environmental assessments right and avoiding delays. This increases the likelihood that renewable energy projects can become a reality faster, says Tobias Grindsted, Chief Consultant at the Danish Energy Agency.

The platform collects data across borders and actors, as the marine environment does not know national borders. This requires cooperation between both public and private actors as well as access to international data sources.

EA-Tools can be found at eatools.miljoeportal.dk and has been developed in collaboration with, among others, Collabora, the Danish Agency for Green Land Redevelopment & Aquatic Environment and several other partners.
