Faster and safer: Crane simulator improves offshore wind installation

New crane simulator at RelyOn Nutec provides training that even experienced crane operators won't want to miss, because the experience is very close to reality.

It's beautiful - really beautiful, with grazing horses, green trees and fields, as you approach RelyOn Nutec's outdoor training facility, even though it's only a few kilometers from Esbjerg.

Inside, RelyOn Nutec's Scandinavian director Claus Nexø Hansen is proud of what the safety provider can offer in terms of training: Firefighting, high-altitude rescue and helicopter training are just some of the things that go on here. RelyOn Nutec is global with more than 30 training facilities around the world, and the company trains more than 250,000 people every year from over 10,000 companies.

But even for one of the world's largest providers of safety courses, continued development is important. Here, this means virtual and intelligent training.

- Virtual training is the new breed. We offer the annual refresher courses partly online. This is a huge advantage for our students, because now they can take the training whenever and wherever they want. Our online training is also intelligent because it finds the weak point of the trainee and asks in depth questions there, explains Claus Nexø Hansen.

The online training was developed in-house at RelyOn Nutec, and it helps to save energy and time for customers. There is simply no longer a need to transport the trainees to training facilities that may be located at the other end of the country. Onsite courses are also an option.

- It just makes much more sense to send an instructor rather than 20 trainees coming to us. That is the future, states Claus Nexø Hansen.

The crane simulator

One of the new features at RelyOne Nutec is a crane simulator that can improve even the skilled and experienced crane operator. It's like stepping into the cockpit of a real crane to sit in the seat of the crane simulator.

The green transition has already led shipping companies to invest massively in installation vessels for offshore wind farms that can lift wings, nacelles and towers. The job of a crane operator here can best be compared to when an experienced pilot gets to fly a Boeing 747.

- The crane operators have at least ten to 15 years of experience, and they are already really skilled. Yet we can provide training that can optimize the installation work so that it can be done faster and safer, says Per Christoffersen, a crane instructor at RelyOne Nutec and a trained crane operator with 25 years of experience.

Kurt E. Thomsen has pioneering experience in offshore installations in particular. He is global head of lifting service at RelyOn Nutec with a whopping 38 years of experience in the crane industry. That experience also includes the fact that he was a crane operator during the installation of the Nysted and Horns Rev 1 wind farms. A lot has happened since then, and the work as a crane operator has become easier than before.

- In our simulator, we can create the exact conditions for any offshore installation. This means that the crane operator can train for this particular installation before the work begins offshore, says Kurt E. Thomsen.

It is an opportunity that the crane operators have really welcomed.

- Once the crane operators are in the simulator's cockpit, they don't want to leave again, says Claus Nexø Hansen, smiling, about the immediate success the simulator has had.

Increased safety

- Normally, a newly trained crane operator must be trained as a sideman by an experienced crane operator for between six and 12 months, for example, when they start working in a port. With the simulator, it is possible to reduce that period, explains Kurt E. Thomsen.

It is not only an increase in efficiency. It is also an improvement in safety. The simulator can simulate both harsh weather and possible accident scenarios.

- After training in the simulator, the crane operator knows what to do if a wire breaks, or how to carry out an installation if there are waves or wind, says Kurt E. Thomsen.

It is not only offshore wind turbine installations that can benefit from RelyOn Nutec's simulator.

- We can create all kinds of work situations that you can experience as a crane operator. It could be in the ports or on construction sites, says Per Christoffersen, as he quickly changes the control panels in the simulator, so that it is a container crane in a port.

Can be set up anywhere

As with other safety courses, the training does not have to take place in one of RelyOn Nutec's facilities. Today, there are two simulators in Denmark and two in Norway, and that is just the beginning.

- We can set up the crane simulator in a port if the crane operators are to be trained there, says Per Christoffersen, who expects to travel around the world with the simulator.

- For that matter, we can set up the simulator on the sixth floor of the Bangkok Hilton Hotel, adds Claus Nexø Hansen.

The director clearly knows that the Far East is one of the places where offshore wind turbines will need to be installed in the future. But the distance is not something that will stop RelyOn Nutec from conducting crane courses in the installation of offshore wind farms around the world.
