230 out of 438 masts have now been erected on the West Coast Link, and the establishment of the overhead lines is on schedule. On the section between Esbjerg and Tarm, all masts have been erected and prepared with wires. This is reported by Energinet.
The West Coast Link is divided into three sections, which are planned to be commissioned individually. Although the first overhead line section is now complete, the section between Endrup and Stovstrup has not yet been commissioned. This is due to challenges on the cable section.
-On the cable section, we have some challenges north of Varde Å. Here, we have to carry out long undercuttings instead of burying the cables. It is the soil that prevents us from digging, and as a result of flooding, the start of this work was delayed. This means that we will not put voltage on that part of the line until the autumn of 2025 instead of this spring, says Chief Project Manager Christian Jensen, who is Chief Project Manager at Energinet.
The project has generally been challenged by water, which has particularly delayed the cable laying. This means that the first line will be operational six months later than planned. However, this will not affect the rest of the connection. On the contrary, the last line, Stovstrup-Idomlund, is expected to be operational earlier than planned - already in April 2026 rather than summer 2026.
The West Coast Link is being built on all three lines simultaneously to ensure progress. However, the construction work has been moved around along the way.
-It has not been possible to carry out the construction work in sequence, as in some places we had to wait for expropriations, or environmental conditions have meant that we had to start at a different time of year. Finally, the very wet fields have led to a very high consumption of road slabs, which has forced us to change the plan along the way, says Christian Jensen.
Right now, the undercutting continues at Varde Å, while the last foundations between Stovstrup and Holstebro are being established. The foundation work is expected to be completed in August 2025.
The West Coast Link is part of the expansion of the high-voltage grid, which will make it possible to connect more offshore wind farms, solar farms and future PtX plants. The connection will be established with 400 kilovolt (kV) overhead lines on a new type of mast, the Thor mast, while a smaller part of the route will be constructed as underground cables.
A total of 438 masts will be erected on the West Coast Link. The commissioning is planned for October 2025 for Endrup-Stovstrup, first quarter 2026 for the Endrup border and second quarter 2026 for Stovstrup-Idomlund.
