The Independent Research Foundation of Denmark has granted 132 million DKK to 42 green research projects as part of the 'Free Green Research' programme. The projects are broad and cover topics such as recycling electric car batteries, growing quinoa in Denmark and solutions to global food security.

The chairman of the thematic ad hoc committee, Jan Oskar Jeppesen, highlights the wealth of ideas among the researchers and the importance of supporting research across disciplines:

- We have emphasized that there is an opportunity for research within and across all main academic areas, as many different paths can lead to green transition, and this has resulted in some very inspiring and promising projects receiving funding, says Jan Oskar Jeppesen.

Chairman of the Board Søren Serritzlew emphasizes the breadth and relevance of the projects in relation to climate challenges:

- It is clear that there is both the will and ability on the part of researchers to solve the climate and environmental challenges that our society faces. With projects within power-to-X, CO2 storage and groundwater protection, the projects cover a broad range of the many climate and environmental challenges that we face, says Søren Serritzlew.

The 'Free Green Research' program is one of nine politically prioritized themes, as a supplement to free research based on the researchers' own initiatives.

Of the 333 applications the foundation received, 13 percent of the projects were awarded funding.
