The use of energy crops such as corn has had a major impact on Danish biogas production. From August 2025, corn will be banned as an energy crop, but a new report shows that biogas plants are largely assessed to be able to adapt without significant reductions in production.   The Danish Energy Agency writes this in a press release.

- The biogas plants have already taken steps to switch to alternative biomasses, and although there will be increased production costs, it is estimated that the total biogas production will only decrease to a limited extent, says CEO of SEGES Innovation Torben Markussen.

The report points out that straw can play a central role in future biogas production, but that there is still a need for technological development to fully exploit the potential. Stricter rules for energy crops are seen as a step towards increased sustainability in biogas production.
