The case of the pressured Climate Minister Lars Aagaard (M) takes a turn on Tuesday afternoon. Three North Atlantic mandates now announce that they support the government and Climate Minister Lars Aagaard in the case of withheld information about delays in the expansion of the electricity grid. They are Aaja Chemnitz (IA), Anna Falkenberg (SP) and Sjúrður Skaale (JF).
The three parliamentarians from Greenland and the Faroe Islands explain their position in a written message to Ritzau.
- We trust that the minister will involve and inform the parliament to a satisfactory degree in the future. On this basis, we support the minister and the government as a whole.
However, the three politicians still want to emphasize that Lars Aagaard's concealment of the delays is criticizable. It is "regrettable" that information about a major delay in the green transition was not shared with the Folketing, it says.
- It is crucial for trust and parliamentary work that the parties in the Folketing are kept informed on an ongoing basis, they write.
There are a total of four North Atlantic mandates. The fourth, Aki-Matilda Høegh-Dam from Greenlandic Naleraq, has not yet made up her mind, but it is not in her interest to overthrow a minister, she tells DR on Tuesday afternoon. It is highly unusual for North Atlantic mandates to get directly involved in domestic political issues.
That is why the development is "spectacular", says Noa Redington, political commentator and former spin doctor for Prime Minister Helle Thorning Schmidt.
- The drama about Lars Aagaard is taking a new and unexpected turn, and the idea that the government will just let Lars Aagaard sail his own lake has been dismissed. This is evidence of a government that is putting all its chips on not toppling a minister, he says.
There is negative parliamentarism in Denmark, so there must be a majority against Lars Aagaard if he is to be overthrown as minister. The government has 85 mandates behind it, and with the three North Atlantic parties they have 88. The focus will therefore be on finding the last mandate that can secure the government.
This can be found among the independents Jon Stephensen, Mike Fonseca, Theresa Scavenius, Jeppe Søe or North Atlantic Aki-Matilda Høegh-Dam.
Usually a majority of 90 mandates is created, but Peter Seier Christensen has been on sick leave from the Folketing for a long time and is not expected to cast his vote, making 89 the important number, which will result in a tie.
