Port of Rønne brings forward port expansion to make room for more wind projects

In order to accommodate an agreement on more offshore wind in the Baltic Sea, which is expected to be adopted later today, the Port of Rønne is bringing forward a planned port expansion so that the port can handle several projects at the same time in a few years.

Government leaders from the Baltic Sea region and top EU officials are meeting today at The Baltic Energy Security Energy Summit at Marienborg. No official announcement has been made about an agreement yet, but a nice draft of the agreement suggests that the countries will agree on a sevenfold increase in offshore wind capacity by 2030.

To meet the demand such an agreement will bring about, the Port of Rønne is bringing forward a planned port expansion so that the port can handle several projects at the same time in a few years, the port said in a statement.

Since the latest expansion in 2019, the Port of Rønne has become an important player for green energy in the Baltic Sea. Its position is, among other things, created by the Port of Rønne being chosen as the shipping port for a number of wind turbine projects to be established in the Baltic Sea in the coming years.

Last year, Scandinavia's largest wind turbine farm "Kriegers Flak" was shipped from Rønne, and this year both foundations and wind turbines for the German project "Arcardis Ost 1" will be shipped from the port. With the advancement of the expansion, which will enable the port to handle several projects at the same time, the port hopes to maintain and strengthen its position in the wind market.

- Bornholm's location in the Baltic Sea means that we at the Port of Rønne are experiencing enormous interest in using our port for shipping wind turbines. This need will only increase in the coming years, and this will mean that port infrastructure for OWE projects may become a scarce commodity in the Baltic Sea in a few years. We are therefore bringing forward a planned expansion of the port, so that in a few years we can handle several projects at the same time, says Lars Nordahl Lemvigh, CEO of Rønne Havn A/S.
