The ports of North Jutland can play a key role in terms of loading and unloading CO2 for storage, as a bunkering terminal for green fuels and as a green growth center for CCUS. This is shown by a new report that Niras has prepared at the request of the North Jutland business lighthouse CO2Vision.
The analysis creates an overview of the overall potential for CCUS at the Port of Frederikshavn, the Port of Hanstholm, the Port of Hirtshals, the Port of Aalborg and the Port of Skagen and highlights the roles that the ports can play in this regard.
According to the report, three ports in particular, the Port of Hanstholm, the Port of Hirtshals and the Port of Aalborg, have great potential and great ambitions within different areas of the CCUS agenda.
Together, the three ports encompass the entire spectrum within the three roles that the analysis is based on; CO2 terminal, green gas station and green growth center for CCUS. informs CO2Vision in a press release.
- The analysis shows that there is enormous potential in the ports of North Jutland when it comes to CCUS and CCS. It is important that we cooperate to create the necessary framework conditions so that the ports become a focal point for the new, green industries that will emerge in the coming years, says Director of the Port of Hirtshals Per Holm Nørgaard.
Hirtshals is well located in terms of storing CO2 in the North Sea, and under the umbrella of Greenport Scandinavia, which is a collaboration between, among others, Port of Hirtshals, Aalborg Portland, Ineos, Evida, Wintershall and Biocarb are already collaborating on the capture and storage of CO2 from 2025. In addition, there are plans for a CO2 pipeline from Aalborg to Hirtshals.
PtX focus at Port of Aalborg
At Port of Aalborg, they see great potential in the downstream industry for CCUS, including a business park and test center for manufacturers of technology, components, etc. for CCUS.
Especially the green fuels of the future play a major role at Port of Aalborg, which has recently received a demonstration plant for the production of e.g. hydrogen and e-methanol. Therefore, they are also pleased with the report's conclusions.
- It is a good and thorough analysis of the potential of the ports of North Jutland. It supports that if we stand together across competencies and geographies, we in North Jutland have a strong position where our ports can take a leading role in the green transition, says CEO at Port of Aalborg Kristian Thulesen Dahl. He continues:
- We are confirmed that it is right to invest in both PtX, the green fuels of the future, and CO2 storage. Right now we are particularly well prepared to take on the role of green growth center for CCUS – here our partners are particularly advanced.
CO2Vision is the North Jutland business lighthouse, which will make North Jutland an international pioneer region for CO2 capture, use, transport and storage in 2030.
