In 2022, more than 2,700 employees came to work on a regular working day at one of the more than 100 different companies based at the Port of Odense in Munkebo in Kerteminde Municipality.
What corresponds to more than 1/3 of all private employment in Kerteminde Municipality in 2022 originated from the port. The area where the former Odense Steel Shipyard and later Lindøværft were located is once again one of the largest workplaces on Funen, the Port of Odense states in a press release.
- Not many believed that we could rebuild a large workplace at the old Lindøværft. But thanks to the adaptable and hardworking people in the local area, we have succeeded in transforming the former Lindøværft into Denmark's largest production port for offshore wind turbines, says Carsten Aa, CEO, Port of Odense A/S.
More employees on the way
The former shipyard area is now home to more than 100 different companies within the maritime sector, the shipbuilding industry, as well as companies that produce parts for offshore wind turbines and make a crucial contribution to the green transition in Denmark and Europe.
The latest figures from Statistics Denmark apply to the year 2022, but it is not inconceivable that they will be surpassed when the number of private employees in Kerteminde Municipality is calculated for the year 2023.
The Port of Odense has already conducted a count that shows that this year 3,200 employees will pass through the gate to the port on a normal working day, and thus there are now more employees at the port than there were at the old Lindøværft when it was closed.
- It is a fantastic story that it has been possible to rebuild the old shipyard area, so that the Port of Odense now employs even more people, and has developed into Denmark's largest production port for offshore wind turbines, says Carsten Aa, CEO, Odense Havn A/S.
The expectation is that the development will continue in the coming years. Therefore, the Port of Odense is currently investigating how the shipping channel and quay areas can best be expanded, so that the port can also facilitate the production of the increasingly large parts for offshore wind turbines in the future.
