The Port of Hirtshals has an ambition to become a hub for the production and consumption of green energy. That ambition is now getting a good push in the right direction, as the Norwegian company Norwegian Hydrogen will establish a hydrogen production facility on the port's grounds. This is stated by the Port of Hirtshals in a statement.

The final decision to establish itself at the port comes after a consortium led by Norwegian Hydrogen has received a grant of approximately 67 million DKK from the EU's research and innovation program Horizon Europe. The money will go to the Convey project, which aims to establish an integrated hydrogen ecosystem at the Port of Hirtshals.

- Norwegian Hydrogen is setting a benchmark for the development of green hydrogen in the Nordic region. Through the Convey project, we aim to contribute significantly to the transition to a low-carbon economy throughout the region and strengthen our commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship in the hydrogen sector, says Jens Berge, CEO of Norwegian Hydrogen.

The project will utilize renewable energy from local wind turbines to produce green hydrogen. The project includes the construction of a five MW electrolysis plant, a large filling station for heavy transport and distribution networks for hydrogen, oxygen and heat. The goal is to produce at least 500 tons of green hydrogen per year.

Joy in Hirtshals

The Port of Hirtshals has worked purposefully to establish hydrogen production at the port, and there is therefore joy at the port about Norwegian Hydrogen's plans to build a plant at the port.

- We have a clear ambition to become a hub for the production and consumption of green energy. Therefore, the establishment of a large hydrogen plant at the port fits perfectly into our strategy. The agreement with Norwegian Hydrogen means that we are taking another step towards becoming the greenest port in Europe, says CEO Per Holm Nørgaard from the Port of Hirtshals.

In addition to Norwegian Hydrogen and the Port of Hirtshals, Vireon, Greenport North, Hirtshals Transport Center, Biomega, Lancar Nutri, Vendelbo Spedition, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, Next Consult and Hydrogen Valley are also part of the consortium behind the upcoming hydrogen plant. The broad representation with hydrogen production, logistics, transport and optimization of energy systems excites Per Holm Nørgaard.

- It is precisely this type of collaboration that we prioritize in our efforts to expand the Port of Hirtshals' position as one of the leading ports in Europe when it comes to the production of green fuels. If we all contribute what we do best, we can go a long way, and we are already collaborating with a number of companies on green energy solutions at the port, he says.
