Berlin Maersk is the name of the first in a new series of dual-fuel container ships for A.P. Møller – Mørsk. The ship, which can also run on methanol in addition to traditional fuel, was named on June 18 at Hyundai Heavy Industries' shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea, and marks another step in the shipping company's focus on green fuels. Maersk writes in a statement.

The ship, which has a capacity of 17,480 TEU, is Maersk's largest methanol ship to date. It will make its first port call in Shanghai on July 7 as part of the AE3 route between East Asia and Northern Europe.

- We continue to build a ship toolbox that can adapt to multiple fuel paths because fleet renewal is essential to maintain our competitiveness and at the same time demonstrate our commitment to decarbonization, says Anda Cristescu, Head of Chartering & Newbuilding at Maersk.

The ship is similar in design to the previous Ane Mærsk class, but has a wider hull construction, making it the largest methanol ship in Maersk's fleet.

- We are pleased that we are now starting to receive the ships in the Berlin Mærsk series. Since we decided to order the first dual-fuel methanol ship in 2021, a lot has happened, and many other shipping companies have also invested in this propulsion technology. Our new Berlin Maersk class builds on the foundation we laid with Laura Maersk and later the Ane Maersk class. The Berlin Maersk class demonstrates our continued focus on innovation and optimization and sets a new standard for efficiency in the industry, says Ole Graa Jakobsen, Head of Fleet Technology at Maersk.

The remaining five ships in the series are expected to be delivered during 2025 and will all sail under the Danish flag.
