Port of Hirtshals ready with its first climate report

The Port of Hirtshals has prepared its first climate accounts, and in addition to an overview of the port's total CO2 emissions, areas with the greatest potential for reducing emissions have also been identified.

Emission-free in 2025 - That is the ambition for the Port of Hirtshals. To get closer to this goal, the port has just produced its first climate accounts. The Port of Hirtshals' CO2 emissions in 2021 totaled 335.7 tons and were distributed as follows: District heating: 19.5 percent, mobile plants (vessels, marine gas oil, truck gas, etc.): 28.4 percent. and Electricity: 52 percent, the port states in a statement.

The port itself calls the climate accounts an eye-opener, and indicates that it can be used as a strong starting point for where to focus climate efforts so that they make the most sense.

- We naturally had an idea about the electricity consumption, but this is the first time that we have put our climate impact into a system and in this way have gained an overall overview of where there is the greatest potential for lowering our CO2 emissions and in the long term meet our goal of being emission-free in 2025. Cooling of fish naturally accounts for a large share of the CO2 accounts, and we are therefore in the process of clarifying the potential for, among other things, more control of energy consumption, says Peter Ydesen, technical manager at the Port of Hirtshals.

The fishing terminal in Hirtshals is with its 6,500 square meters, one of the largest in Denmark, and every year fish worth a total of approximately DKK 224 million passes through the terminal. The fish in the terminal is mainly landed at the port of Hirtshals and is subsequently shipped to all of Europe. It is primarily the unbroken cooling chain that ensures the quality of the freshly caught fish that is a major power consumer, but even if the cooling chain is maintained, there are still opportunities to tweak various parameters.

- In addition to intelligent management of energy consumption, replacing older pumps and electric motors and heat recovery from the cooling system can also contribute to lower CO2 emissions, says Peter Ydesen.

In addition, almost all street lighting at the port has been replaced with LED.
