The pipeline transports, among other things, Norwegian gas from the North Sea to Polish consumers, while the Danish gas storage facilities support security of supply during winter periods.

The gas year 2024 has been characterized by strong Danish security of supply, and Baltic Pipe has contributed to European security of supply. These are two of the conclusions in Energinet's Report on Gas Security 2024. Energinet writes in a press release.

- It was atypical that market players needed to withdraw gas from gas storage in late summer. This usually only becomes relevant at the beginning of the winter period, but maintenance at two locations in the gas system in September meant that a lot of gas was withdrawn from storage already in September 2024, says Chief Engineer in the Operations Development – Gas department at Energinet Christian Meiniche Andersen.

- It is important for security of supply in the EU that all member states meet the common requirements for sufficient storage filling over the year. However, in a situation where there is ample gas in storage in Europe, it is less crucial whether Denmark has locally filled gas storage. Market players act at a European level, and here market forces, as well as the expansion of the European infrastructure with the Baltic Pipe, contribute to the gas being supplied where the need is greatest, says Clement Johan Ulrichsen, Head of Gas Market at Energinet.
