The EU remains dependent on gas imports – the US has become a major supplier

The EU has significantly reduced its gas consumption in recent years, but remains deeply dependent on imported gas. In 2024, the EU imported a total of 273 billion cubic meters of gas, which is significantly less than before the energy crisis. The background is the war in Ukraine, which revealed the EU's great dependence on Russian gas. Before the war, about half of the EU's gas imports came from Russia, but since then EU countries have both reduced consumption and shifted imports to other suppliers. This is reported by DR.

According to figures from the Belgian think tank Bruegel, Norway now supplies 31 percent of the EU's gas, the United States accounts for 27 percent, while Russian gas has fallen to 12.9 percent. The EU has also decided to completely phase out imports of Russian gas, including a ban on Russian LNG from 2027 and a stop to gas via pipelines from September of the same year. This development has made the US a central player in the European gas market, especially through deliveries of liquefied gas transported by ship. And despite the current controversy surrounding the US, the country is preferable as a supplier compared to Russia, is the assessment of Arne Lohmann Rasmussen, chief analyst at Global Risk Management.

- It is private companies that run gas production in the US, and they are interested in making money. They actually also make good money selling the gas to Europe, so I consider gas deliveries from the US to be reasonably stable, he says, but points out that the US could use the gas as an energy weapon against the EU. In that case, the EU will have to source gas from countries like Algeria, Qatar and Canada, but it will be at a higher price.
