Denmark and China have signed a cooperation agreement on green shipbuilding and green maritime technologies. The agreement was signed in Beijing by Minister of Industry and Information Technology Morten Bødskov and the Chinese Minister of Industry and Information Technology, Li Lecheng, and aims to strengthen international efforts for a more climate-friendly shipping. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology informs in a press release.
The cooperation agreement, which is a so-called Memorandum of Understanding, will, among other things, promote dialogue and cooperation on the development of green maritime technologies within the framework of the International Maritime Organization, IMO. The initiatives will contribute to reducing ship emissions and supporting the use of green ship technology globally.
- Denmark has paved the way for international shipping for generations. The Danish maritime industry is far ahead in green technologies, and we have ambitions to strengthen the green transition of shipping. With this agreement, we are translating ambitions into action and marking our maritime partnership with China as well as a shared focus on the green transition, says Morten Bødskov, CEO of the Ministry of Business and Industry.
The agreement is considered to be significant for the Danish maritime sector, as China accounts for more than half of global orders for new ships. In 2024, Danish exports of maritime goods and services to China amounted to DKK 3.1 billion.
The cooperation continues a previous agreement, which was concluded during the Minister of Business and Industry's visit to China in 2023, and builds on maritime cooperation between Denmark and China, which dates back to 1974.
