Andel Energi has purchased the so-called Flex Platform from IBM after several years of collaboration. The goal is to enable private households and small businesses to receive payment for using electricity at times when the electricity grid needs relief. The energy company states this in a statement.

The Flex Platform, which was developed in collaboration between IBM and Andel Energi, makes it possible to balance the electricity grid in real time by adjusting consumption according to the amount of green electricity from solar and wind. The technology has already been connected to over 2,000 power plants, and flexibility grew over 30 times from 2023 to 2024. This is now prompting Andel Energi to take the next step and roll out the solution widely.

- We are now at a place where the technology works, and we have achieved a solid customer base. Therefore, it is natural that Andel Energi takes the next step and makes flexible electricity consumption available to everyone, says Jack Kristensen, Director of Flexibility at Andel Energi.

IBM continues as a contributor to the development through a multi-year service agreement, and the Flex Platform remains hosted on IBM Cloud.

- At IBM, we continue to sharpen our focus on our hybrid cloud and AI strategy, and therefore the Flex Platform will benefit from investment and further development from our long-standing partner in the field, Andel Energi, says Michael Jepsen, Partner at IBM Consulting.

The background to the technology is the need for greater flexibility in the Danish electricity grid in line with the spread of renewable energy and electrification. According to Andel Energi, today, larger companies in particular have access to flexibility schemes, but the company now wants to ensure that ordinary Danes with electric cars, heat pumps and solar cells also have the opportunity to use their electricity consumption actively.

With the acquisition, Andel Energi plans to make it possible for users to connect their electrical equipment via an app, so that they automatically participate in the system and receive payment for flexible consumption.

- Our vision is that flexible electricity consumption should be as easy as swiping on your phone. In the app, you select a heat pump, solar cells and charging box - and we will connect you to the market. It should be simple, green and economically attractive, concludes Jack Kristensen.
