HOFOR is planning to build a new power plant on the old coal site at Svanemølleværket. The plant will house large boilers, a heat storage facility and a heat pump, and it will replace the current heating systems in the historic heating plant. HOFOR writes this in a press release.

– Where coal piles for Svanemølleværket used to be, we are now building a modern power plant. We are building several different units to strengthen flexibility and security of supply. These are large boilers, a large heat storage facility and a heat pump that utilizes the heat energy in the surrounding seawater – and which will be the largest in the capital area when it is put into operation. These units will be able to utilize green electricity from the sun and wind,
says Supply Director Gorm Elikofer, who is Supply Director at HOFOR.

– For reasons of security of supply, the power plant will also house a smaller plant with gas boilers. These can, for example, supply peak loads during periods of high heat demand, and they are planned to run on CO2-neutral biogas. The aim of the whole thing is to future-proof the capital's heat supply, says Gorm Elikofer.

CTR, the Central Municipalities Transmission Company, which owns and operates the transmission network for district heating in the capital area, also supports the project and will take over part of the heat production.

- We must develop a more sustainable heat supply in Copenhagen, both for the sake of the climate and for security of supply. The new heating plant will be an important step towards being able to supply more electricity to district heating and reduce the need for biomass and fossil fuels in the capital, says CTR Chairman Line Barfod, who is also the Mayor for Technology and the Environment in Copenhagen.

– Increased electrification of district heating is important in relation to the new climate strategy that we are working on in the City Council, which is to make Copenhagen climate positive in 2035, says Line Barfod.

HOFOR emphasizes that the power plant must be adapted to the historical environment around the Svanemølle Power Plant, where a technical museum is planned in the old buildings.

– The new plant must play well with the physical framework in which it will be part of. This naturally applies not least to the historical buildings of the Svanemølle Power Plant, which are intended for a future technical museum, and which can become a magnet for both tourists and the capital's own citizens. We must ensure that there is a good connection where we can bridge the gap between old and new, so that the entire area will appear harmonious and with respect for the industrial heritage, says Area Manager for Urban Development & Strategic Projects at HOFOR Nana Gees.

According to HOFOR, the new power plant will be ready for use in 2030 if the local plan proposal is adopted.
