Nordsøfonden becomes a partner in a new license for exploration and possible storage of CO2 on land. The license has been awarded to Norne Thorning Storage ApS and covers an area at Thorning in Jutland. Nordsøfonden participates on behalf of the state with a 20 percent share. This is stated in a press release by Nordsøfonden.

– Today is a really good day for Nordsøfonden. The Thorning license has now been awarded, which means that exploration activities can begin. These activities will build on the initial studies conducted by GEUS and help us understand the potential of the subsurface in the area, says Lene Borch Frøtlund, CEO of Nordsøfonden.

If the area is assessed as suitable for CO2 storage after the exploration phase, the license holder can apply for a permit for actual storage.

The Thorning license is the fourth license for onshore CO? storage that has been awarded in Denmark. With the new license, Nordsøfonden now has a total of seven licenses for exploration and storage of CO2.

– CCS technology has the potential to contribute significantly to Denmark's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. As the state's company for subsurface resources, our primary task is to create value from Denmark's subsurface – and we do this, among other things, by playing a central role in current and future licenses for CO? exploration and storage. Therefore, we welcome the new license in Thorning and look forward to the collaboration with Norne Thorning Storage ApS, says Lene Borch Frøtlund.

The Danish Energy Agency is also currently processing applications for exploration of the subsurface for CO2 storage in several coastal areas as part of the fourth tender round.
