Ørsted's project for CO2 capture and storage, Ørsted Kalundborg Hub, has been awarded a 20-year contract by the Danish Energy Agency. This means that Ørsted will establish CO2 capture at the woodchip-fired Asnæsværket in Kalundborg and at the Avedøreværket straw-fired boiler plant in Greater Copenhagen.
The CO2 plant at Asnæsværket is expected to capture 280,000 tonnes of biogenic CO2 annually from the combined heat and power plant. And it is at this plant that NCC has just been awarded a contract with Ørsted for the establishment of foundations, buildings and pipe bridges for the CO2 capture plant in Kalundborg. The company states this in a statement.
- We look forward to working with Ørsted and are proud to be able to contribute to the project and support Denmark's ambitions for CO2 capture and storage. Large and complex construction projects are a key strategic priority for NCC and therefore align well with our core competencies, says Flemming Carlsen, Director of NCC Infrastructure in Denmark.
First step towards CO2 infrastructure
The project marks the first step towards establishing a large-scale CO2 infrastructure in Denmark. The Asnæs plant will not only function as a hub for capturing and transporting Ørsted's own CO2, but can also potentially handle CO2 from other emitters.
- We look forward to starting construction of the first full-scale CO2 capture plant in Denmark together with NCC. Many different initiatives must be initiated to slow down climate change, and with our CCS project we will make a significant contribution to realizing the politically adopted Danish climate targets for 2025 and 2030, says Ole Thomsen, Senior Vice President and Head of Ørsted's Power Plant Business.
The task, which amounts to approximately DKK 200 million for NCC, includes the civil works, including foundations and concrete works, that are necessary for the construction of the actual process plant in Kalundborg. The project is expected to be ready for use by the end of 2025.
