Denmark plays a central role when Project Greensand marks First Carbon Storage. From the port of Esbjerg, it is demonstrated for the first time in the world that captured CO2 transported across national borders can be stored offshore with the aim of mitigating climate change.

The Crown Prince gives the go-ahead for Danish CO2 storage: "New green chapter for the North Sea"

On Wednesday, the pipes that pump used CO2 1,800 meters underground under a former oil field were opened.

On Wednesday, Crown Prince Frederik gave the signal that the storage of CO2 in the North Sea's subsoil can begin. This happened at a seance at the port of Esbjerg, where the Greensand pilot project was officially launched.

- Today we are opening a new chapter for the North Sea. A green chapter, said the Crown Prince.

- The Danish subsoil holds great potential for storing CO2, and it gives me great joy today to be able to reverse the traffic in the pipes and send CO2 back into the Danish subsoil for the benefit of the climate, for Denmark, for Europe and our planet.

He referred to the fact that 50 years ago his father, Prince Henrik, officially opened the production of oil and gas that was pumped up from the subsoil in the North Sea. The CO2 is pumped into a sandstone reservoir under the former Nini West oil field.

The reservoir is located approximately 1800 meters below sea level under a series of shale layers that act as a lid. This means that the CO2 is trapped in the porous sandstone cavities. This prevents the greenhouse gas from ending up in the atmosphere and contributing to global warming.

A consortium of Danish and international companies is behind the project, called "Project Greensand". The consortium is working to ensure that from 2025/2026 up to 1.5 million tons of CO2 per year can be stored in the Danish part of the North Sea.

Happy Minister

In 2030, it is expected that up to eight million tons of CO2 per year can be potentially stored. Capture and storage of CO2 plays a central role in the SVM government's goal of climate neutrality by 2045.

Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagaard (M), who was present at the inauguration on Wednesday, is pleased that the storage of CO2 is now a reality.

- CO2 storage in Denmark no longer exists only on paper. Now the process is a reality, and it brings us a good step closer to achieving the climate goals, he says.

An analysis from the think tank Kraka has calculated that capturing, transporting and storing CO2 underground could create between 9,000 and 17,000 Danish jobs.

The figure depends on how large a share of the European market for CO2 storage Denmark takes.
