The EU's Climate Council wants a 90-95 percent CO2 reduction by 2040

EU countries must already approach a neutral CO2 footprint by 2040. Within the next 17 years, the countries must thus reduce their emissions by 90-95 percent compared to 1990. This is the opinion of the EU's Scientific Council on Climate Change, which is the union's counterpart to the Climate Council in Denmark.

The Council's chairman, Professor Ottmar Edenhofer, says that the 2040 target is an important interim goal on the way to a climate-neutral Europe in 2050.

- To achieve this, the EU should reduce CO2 emissions by 90-95 percent by 2040 compared to the level in 1990, he says in a press release from the council.

Denmark already has a target of reducing CO2 emissions by 70 percent. by 2030 and become climate neutral by 2050. The EU has an official goal of reducing the countries' CO2 emissions by 55 percent by 2030.

DI: Denmark should lead the way

The EU has given itself the task of setting a reduction target for 2040 in the first half of next year. According to the Confederation of Danish Industries' climate policy director, Anne Højer Simonsen, Denmark is wise to take the lead and meet the target.

- The EU is simply unavoidable, and what happens in Brussels has enormous significance for the Danish economy and for Danish business. Our Danish climate efforts should serve as inspiration for other countries - and this will be particularly successful when the EU shows its international climate leadership, she says in a press release.

The Council has analysed more than 1,000 paths towards climate neutrality in 2050. Several of them point to a significant upscaling of energy production from wind turbines and solar cells. Combined with increased electrification of energy consumption, this could, according to the EU Climate Council, lead to a nearly climate-neutral energy sector by 2040.

It will also reduce the need to use technology to remove already stored CO2 from the atmosphere, according to the press release from the EU's Scientific Council on Climate Change.
