After breaking all records and expectations in December, Danish exports fell back again in January. Figures from Statistics Denmark show that Danish goods worth 177.9 billion DKK were exported in January, when adjusted for seasonal fluctuations. This is a decline of 8.3 percent compared to December. Looking over the past three months, total exports have increased by 2.2 percent.
Tore Stramer, chief economist at the Danish Confederation of Business, notes that January usually brings an increase in exports. However, he does not believe that there is cause for concern based on the large increase in December.
- In addition, it is probably large fluctuations in production within the pharmaceutical sector that are driving the decline in exports in January. This is clearly a mitigating circumstance, as the pharmaceutical sector's production can typically fluctuate greatly from month to month, he says.
Chief economist at the Confederation of Danish Industry Allan Sørensen notes that January was not the start to 2025 that companies had hoped for. He believes that Danish export companies are facing an uncertain time.
- The uncertainty mainly revolves around the strength of the economic recovery in our European neighbors and future access to the important American market, says Allan Sørensen.
