Electricity consumption has increased particularly at night in the past year. This is partly because that is when many people charge their electric cars. (Archive photo).

Danes' electricity consumption breaks record

Danes used more electricity in 2025 than the year before. This contributes to the green transition, writes Energinet.

Danes' electricity consumption has broken a record and is five percent higher in 2025 than last year.

This is what Energinet writes in a press release.

- It is really good that electricity consumption is increasing because we need green electricity to replace gasoline, diesel, oil, coal, natural gas and other fossil fuels, says the press release from Kim Willerslev Jakobsen, Director of Energinet's System Responsibility.

It is especially the consumption of electricity at night and in the middle of the day that has increased.

According to Energinet, this is probably because more Danes have got electric cars, which are charged when electricity is cheapest.

According to Energinet, flexible consumption contributes to the green transition.

- We would have liked to see the green transition just rumble along on its own at an even faster pace, but in recent years, electrification has lagged a bit, says Kim Willerslev Jakobsen.
