Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagaard has on Monday given the green light for the first permits to be issued to store CO2 in the old oil and gas fields in the North Sea. This is pleasing to the Danish Shipping Association, whose members Ineos and Wintershall DEA with Project Greensand, as well as TotalEnergies, who have been granted the permits. The industry organization sees great opportunities in the new possibilities that the permits open up.
- I am pleased that we can now, as some of the first in Europe, start sending CO2 underground on a larger scale. I am really excited about these projects, which show that Denmark is far ahead when it comes to thinking about new green solutions. This could be the beginning of a whole new North Sea adventure, with maritime transport at the forefront, to the great benefit of growth and employment, says Anne H. Steffensen, CEO of Danske Rederier, in a press release.
As early as the end of 2025, INEOS and Project Greensand estimate that it will be possible to store 1.5 million tons of CO2 per year and up to eight million in 2030. TotalEnergies will store more than five million tons of CO2 per year from 2030 with the Bifrost project.
