The Danish Energy Agency has awarded Aalborg Portland a contract for the capture, transport and storage of 1.25 million tons of CO2 per year. The cement manufacturer's CCS project ACCSION thus receives support from the state CCS fund.
Danish Offshore, which is the industry association for oil, gas and CO2 storage in Denmark, sees the award as an important step in the development of a Danish CCS sector.
- This is very good news for the development of a Danish CCS sector. We have taken a step further towards establishing a CCS value chain, which is absolutely crucial for us to achieve major CO2 reductions and reach future climate goals, says Martin Peter Næsby, CEO of Dansk Offshore, in a press release.
Dansk Offshore also points to the need for a future government to better align the schedules for capture, transport and storage of CO2 across market players.
The industry association also proposes that any remaining funds from the current CCUS pool be re-tendered with the aim of supporting CO2 reductions in Denmark by 2035 at the latest.
- We also call for any remaining funds from the current CCUS pool to be re-tendered with the aim of supporting CO2 reductions in Denmark in 2035 or earlier, and that an independent CCUS pool be established specifically for the 2035 climate goal. Finally, it is very important that the future government is initiating negotiations with the parties in the Danish Parliament to streamline the permit processes for onshore and offshore CO2 storage as quickly as possible,” says Martin Peter Næsby.
