Aalborg Portland has signed an agreement with the EU's Innovation Fund for DKK 1.6 billion in support for the establishment and operation of a CO2 capture plant under the ACCSION project. The signing marks a crucial step towards the development of one of Europe's first fully integrated onshore CCS value chains.

With the final approval, work on developing, constructing and operating the capture plant can begin in earnest. The plant is expected to be operational from 2030 and will reduce Aalborg Portland's CO2 emissions by 1.5 million tonnes annually. It could be ready by the end of 2029, making the company the first cement plant in the EU to produce both grey and white cement with a net-zero CO2 footprint. This is stated by the cement company in a press release.

- The official agreement with the EU's Innovation Fund is a milestone for both Aalborg Portland and the entire cement industry. CO2 capture is a crucial technology for reducing the unavoidable process emissions in cement production, and with this agreement we can aim to become CO2 neutral in Aalborg as early as 2030. This will mean the largest single CO2 reduction in Danish history, and it will thus be an enormous contribution to Denmark's national climate goals, says CEO of Aalborg Portland Søren Holm Christensen.

The upcoming capture plant will capture 1.4 million tons of CO2 annually and reuse the excess heat from the process for district heating supply, equivalent to heating approximately 19,100 households. This will result in an additional 100,000 tonnes of CO2 reductions per year.

Aalborg Portland has allocated 50,000 square metres for the facility, which will be one of the largest CCS facilities in Europe. The captured CO2 will be transported via pipeline to a new onshore storage facility, creating a cost-effective and scalable solution for the cement industry.
