The first dunkelflaute of the winter season pushes up electricity prices

Gray and quiet weather across Europe will cause electricity prices to rise significantly in the coming days.

A special weather phenomenon in the form of Dunkelflaute will hit Denmark and the rest of Europe in the coming days, and it will cause electricity prices to rise. Forecasts indicate that the weather will be both gray and calm from Friday and into the beginning of next week, which means that solar cells and wind turbines will produce significantly less electricity than normal. This is reported by the energy company OK.

Dunkelflaute is a weather situation where high pressure settles over Europe and creates a period of very low wind and solar production.

- On Saturday between 5 and 8 p.m., the electricity price is expected to increase to around DKK 4 per kWh, while it looks set to be highest on Monday with prices around DKK 4.5 per kWh, says Troels Skipper, product manager for electricity at OK.

Denmark is closely connected to the electricity markets in neighboring countries – especially Germany. When there is a surplus of green electricity south of the border, Denmark can import cheap electricity. But when the wind also stops in Germany, production drops significantly, and import options become smaller. In periods with very limited wind and sun, it is therefore to a greater extent fossil energy sources that must cover electricity consumption, which pushes up prices.

During the winter months, Danes will experience more periods of dunkelflaute, but also periods with lower prices, such as in October, when the mild and windy weather provided plenty of green electricity. During the summer, the sun is generally higher, and therefore there are almost always places in Europe where cheap solar energy is produced. During the winter months, there is not the same help from the sun to push down electricity prices.
