NRGi Renewables launches first major battery project

The energy company will establish a 4.6 MW battery at a solar park on Djursland, and expects it to be the first of many.

NRGi Renewables is now embarking on its first major battery project. The energy company has received the green light from Syddjurs Municipality to build a 4.6 MW battery at East Jutland's largest solar park on Djursland.

The battery will help to better utilize solar power and create greater balance in the electricity grid by storing renewable energy when production is high and sending it back when consumption increases.

- We are naturally proud to embark on our first major battery project. It is an important step in the work of utilizing green power more efficiently and creating a better balance between production and consumption. On days when the sun is not shining fully, we can draw on the stored energy instead of fossil fuels, and that is exactly the development we are initiating here, says Jakob Bundgaard, CEO of NRGi Renewables, in a press release.

The battery storage system will have a capacity of 4.6 MW with a storage time of around two hours. This corresponds to approximately 10 megawatt-hours of power – enough for one day's electricity consumption in around 1,000 Danish households. This is NRGi Renewables' first major battery project, but Jakob Bundgaard expects that more will follow.

- There is no doubt that we will see many more battery solutions in the future, both large plants like this and smaller solutions closer to consumers. The batteries will be an important tool for harnessing green energy when it is available and using it when it is truly beneficial, he says.

The project is being carried out in collaboration with Swedish company Capture Energy, which is supplying the battery storage system. NRGi Renewables expects the facility to be ready for operation in the summer of 2026.
