VESTHIMMERLAND: In several Danish municipalities, large solar cell plants are planned to meet the government's green energy goals, but many citizens oppose the projects. This is reported by DR. This is the case, among others, in Vesthimmerland Municipality, where a 630-hectare plant is planned, which will place solar cells close to homes.

The opposition reflects a broad debate about how the green transition should be implemented, especially in the run-up to the municipal elections. Many citizens fear that solar cells will dominate the landscape, reduce the value of properties and create inequality between rural and urban areas.

- It is quite possible that this will be a major part of the election campaign. And if there is a new mayor, I am fine with that. That is the way democracy works, says Mayor Per Bach Laursen (V), who, however, supports the project.

Project splits party

The solar cell project has already affected the commitment of local candidates ahead of the upcoming municipal elections. Lene Ladegaard, the new city council candidate for the Liberal Party, has entered local politics, among other things, because of the plans for the large solar cell plant. This is reported by DR. She points out that the project creates insecurity for citizens in the area, both financially and personally:

- It is about personal finances, housing situation, future dreams and family life. These are things we all want to have in order, and suddenly the rug is pulled out from under us, and everything is left in limbo, she tells the media.

Although Lene Ladegaard and Mayor Per Bach Laursen belong to the same party, they have opposing views on the project. But despite the disagreement, Lene Ladegaard sees it as a strength that there is room for diversity in the city council. She expects that the dialogue with the mayor will remain constructive, and that the collaboration can strengthen the decision-making process around the project.
