ESBJERG: For two years, Esbjerg's mayor, Jesper Frost Rasmussen (V), has been vice president of the World Energy Cities Partnership, an association consisting of 19 important energy cities from all over the world. (Wecp). Now he can step up the ladder and instead call himself president of the partnership, informs Esbjerg Municipality.
Jesper Frost Rasmussen has thus been elected for a two-year period, among other things with the support of the outgoing president and mayor of Aberdeen, Barney Crockett and mayor Sylvester Turner from Houston.
Esbjerg has been part of Wecp since 2013. Since then, the city has been an extremely active partner in the association. Several delegations from the other member cities have visited Esbjerg, and the city in West Jutland has played an important role in expanding Wecp's focus from being solely on oil and gas to also include renewable energy and the transition to more sustainable energy sources.
- I am happy and proud of the vote of confidence that the other member cities have shown by unanimously electing me as president. For Esbjerg, membership has served as a unique showcase, where our green transition has inspired the other cities to such an extent. Even though Esbjerg cannot compare in size with some of the other member cities, people have listened attentively when I have talked about what our companies can do and how far Denmark is ready to go in terms of achieving specific climate goals, says Jesper Frost Rasmussen.
Wecp visits Esbjerg
The next official event in Wecp will take place in Esbjerg in October this year, when the city will host the association's annual meeting. The overall theme for the 2022 annual meeting will be energy transition based on public and private partnerships. Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities Dan Jørgensen (S) is pleased that the choice has fallen on Esbjerg.
- It is a huge pat on the back for Esbjerg's green work that the city will host the meeting between the world's leading energy cities next year. Esbjerg has developed into a green energy metropolis in Northern Europe, just as the people of Esbjerg are at the forefront of a fair green transition, when thousands of oil jobs in the coming years will be replaced with jobs in, among other things, the wind industry and green fuels. I am sure that the meeting between the world's leading energy cities can inspire even more green solutions on the West Coast and around the world, said the minister in connection with the announcement of the hosting.
