US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order postponing the deadline for higher tariffs on a number of countries to take effect. The original deadline was July 9. It has now been postponed to August 1. The White House announced this on Monday evening, Danish time.
It was in early April that the president announced tariffs on imports of goods from a number of countries. He has dubbed the day "Liberation Day".
On the same day that the tariffs came into effect, the US president chose to put several of them on hold for 90 days, during which a lower base tariff of ten percent would apply to most countries. This is the pause that has so far been set to expire on Wednesday.
Trump was subsequently asked whether the new deadline is final. This happened during a dinner at the White House, which was also attended by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
- I would say it is final, but it is not 100 percent final, was the response from Trump, according to AFP.
Earlier on Monday, Trump published two tariff letters to Japan and South Korea on his social media, Truth Social. It states that from August 1, he will introduce a 25 percent tariff on all goods from the two countries.
Later, the White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, said that an additional 12 countries would receive tariff letters. The EU will not receive a letter, EU sources with knowledge of the matter told Reuters on Monday.
The US has reached agreements with Britain and Vietnam, while the US and China have agreed to temporarily lower tariff rates on each other's goods. These are tariffs that at one point reached triple-digit levels. The temporary pause in the tariff war between the US and China expires in mid-August.
The European Commission said that Commission President Ursula von der Leyen had a "good exchange" with Trump on trade when they spoke on Sunday.
Before the reports from the White House, von der Leyen said in a speech to the European Parliament on Monday evening, according to Reuters, that "Europe must show strength" in the ongoing negotiations between the Commission and the US on tariffs and trade.
