Two contracts, which Cadeler itself describes as being of "very high value" together, have just been signed with Ørsted at the WindEurope conference at the Bella Centre in Copenhagen.
The contracts concern work on the Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm. The exact value of the contracts has not been disclosed, but Cadeler states that it classifies the value of a very large contract between 500-700 million euros (3.7-5.2 billion kroner), the company states in a press release.
The first contract includes the transport and installation (T&I) of foundations for all monopiles in the project. The contract marks a new strategic direction for Cadeler as a full-service T&I supplier within offshore foundations. The Hornsea 3 project is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2026 and be completed by the end of the same year, if Ørsted makes a final investment decision for the project. Cadeler and Ørsted previously entered into a reservation agreement for this project in August 2022.
The second contract involves the installation of approximately half of the wind turbine generators (WTGs) for the offshore wind farm. The project is expected to start as soon as the foundation project is completed in the fourth quarter of 2026 and is expected to be completed in 2027. As part of the project, Cadeler will use one of the company’s two new-build X-class vessels.
- We look forward to working with Cadeler when offshore construction begins to ensure a safe and high-quality delivery of the project, says Patrick Harnett, Ørsted’s Vice President for Execution Programmes.
New appointments on the way
Cadeler has installed more than 500 foundations and thus has many years of experience within offshore foundations for wind turbines. The Hornsea 3 agreement will, however, be the first time that the company will manage the full transport and installation (T&I) work as a full-service supplier.
This also means that Cadeler will have full responsibility for the end product as well as for the error reporting period after the installation has been completed. The wind company is therefore in the process of building a strong team of project managers, engineers and specialists in offshore foundations. Cadeler expects to employ 25-30 employees onshore and 30-35 specialists and technicians offshore for this project alone.
In addition, Cadeler has ordered two F-class jack-up vessels, which are specially designed for the transport and installation of the future generation of XXL monopiles used specifically for the Hornsea 3 project.
- The contracts mark a new strategic direction for Cadeler, and we are pleased to finally be able to share what we have been working on for a long time together with our good business partners in Ørsted. We have designed our newbuilds and developed a competent team to specifically handle all aspects of offshore foundation projects, so we are ready for this strategic move. We look forward to playing a major role in this ambitious and record-breaking offshore wind project,” says Mikkel Gleerup, CEO of Cadeler.
When completed, Hornsea 3 will generate a minimum of 2.85 GW of renewable energy.
