On Wednesday, Minister of Education and Research Christina Egelund presented the government's priorities for public research and innovation 2026-29. In her proposal, the government aims to strengthen Denmark's research in areas such as safety, health and climate, while at the same time creating better conditions for both the risk-taking top research that forms the basis for future scientific breakthroughs, and for innovation and entrepreneurship.

The government's research proposal is praised by the Danish Engineering Association IDA, which calls it both wise and necessary to focus on green transition and critical technologies. The proposal proposes that two-thirds of the research reserve should go to these areas, which according to IDA is an important step for Denmark's technological capacity and Europe's strategic independence.

- I think the government's proposal is truly forward-looking. In IDA, we focus on increased strategic autonomy in Denmark and Europe, so we look forward to the political priorities within research and innovation that the minister has presented today (Wednesday ed.), says Laura Klitgård

It is particularly encouraging that the government will strengthen the framework for innovation, commercialization and stable research funding through multi-year grants.

- It is absolutely right to prioritize Denmark's and Europe's ability to be more technologically capable - both in the climate area and in relation to our strategic security. The extraordinary geopolitical situation requires that we be stronger technologically,
says Laura Klitgaard, who is the chair of IDA, in a press release.

She also highlights the need to include the defense budget in research efforts and suggests that two percent of the defense budget be targeted at innovation and technology development. According to IDA, this will support the government's ambitions and ensure Denmark a stronger role in the future security policy and technological landscape.
