A new bill is to protect the Danish merchant fleet if Denmark becomes involved in war or a major power conflict breaks out. The proposal will now be considered in the Danish Parliament. This is reported by the Ministry of Business and Industry.
The government is proposing to make a loan facility of DKK 6 billion available to the War Insurance Institute, which is responsible for insuring the ships. This is to ensure payment of compensation from day one, and at the same time expand coverage to include passengers, crew and cargo.
- We live in a new reality with geographical tensions and war on European soil. Therefore, we must be prepared for even the most unpleasant scenarios. As a proud and great maritime nation, Denmark must be able to keep its merchant fleet sailing if a major power war breaks out or if we are attacked by a foreign power. Therefore, we are now exercising due diligence and, among other things, setting aside DKK 6 billion to secure the Danish merchant fleet. By keeping the Danish merchant fleet afloat in a war situation, we also contribute to ensuring security of supply for Denmark, the Faroe Islands and Greenland, says Morten Bødskov, Minister of Industry and Trade.
The proposal also means that the administration of the War Insurance Institute can be transferred to a private player, and that ships with temporary permission to sail under the Danish flag are also covered by the insurance.
