The agreement on the Bornholm Energy Island, where Denmark and Germany share the financing, marks an important step for the expansion of offshore wind and European energy cooperation, according to the Danish Chamber of Commerce. The project can strengthen security of supply and reduce dependence on imported energy, but it is a "very expensive project," whose positive effect could most likely be realized much cheaper.
This is what the industry organization writes in a press release.
- Bornholm Energy Island is a historic project that can strengthen both Danish and European security of supply and reduce dependence on imported energy. It is also an important signal that the energy infrastructure of the future must be considered more cross-border, says Ulrich Bang, deputy director for climate, energy, environment and construction at the Danish Chamber of Commerce.
At the same time, the organization warns against repeating the model:
- There is no doubt that Energiø Bornholm is expensively put together and does not at all give a picture of what offshore wind costs today. The project economics have been weak, and choices have been made that have made the construction more complex and more costly than necessary, says Ulrich Bang, pointing out that other solutions could have been established more cheaply.
Danish Chamber of Commerce therefore calls for future projects to be left to the companies' own design choices to a greater extent and with strict safety requirements.
