The installation ship of the future is just as impressive as the enormous wind turbines that are to be installed at sea. And just as the large offshore wind farms require correspondingly large investments, the same situation applies to the installation vessels.

The Danish shipping company Cadeler has just proven this, as they have invested a whopping four billion DKK in two state-of-the-art installation vessels in the new X-class. Cosco Shipping Heavy Industry will build and deliver the two vessels following a tender.

With the two new vessels, Cadeler is doubling its fleet to meet the growing demand for installation vessels, says Mikkel Gleerup, CEO of Cadeler A/S. At the same time, Cadeler will have the industry's largest loading, transport and installation capacity after the expansion.

- The expansion of our fleet is an important strategic priority to ensure that we can meet the demand for greater installation capacity that we see from our customers, says Mikkel Gleerup.

The new X-class vessels are designed to operate in some of the harshest conditions in the world. The main crane will have a capacity of more than 2,000 tons and the ship can carry a cargo of 17,600 tons.

The two upcoming vessels will be able to install seven complete 15 MW offshore wind turbines per cargo, just as the vessels will also be able to install offshore wind turbines with a potential of more than 20 MW in the future.

The first of the vessels is to be delivered to Cadeler in the third quarter of 2024, while the next vessel will follow in the first quarter of 2025.

Cadeler expects the installation vessels to be put into service quickly. The first ship already has installation work on its calendar, as Cadeler has been hired to install the upcoming 1.4 GW Sofia offshore wind farm in the North Sea, which will consist of 100 Siemens-Gamesa 14 MW offshore wind turbines.
