Warning to private turbine owners: Beware of cable thieves

Many older turbines are not monitored, making them an easy target for cable thieves, according to Nordic Wind Consultants, which is part of Green Power Denmark.

Lars Otto Kristensen's private Micon 750 turbine, which stands at Højby on Funen, recently had uninvited guests in the dead of night, and they did not go home empty-handed. Thus, the thieves got away with cables worth a total of several hundred thousand kroner.

- Someone must have known what they had done. They first stopped the wind turbine before they climbed to the top and cut the cables. We are talking about five cables of 45 meters each, so it took at least a few hours to cut the cables into smaller pieces before they could be carried out of the wind turbine and driven away, the wind turbine owner tells Green Power Denmark.

The cables are made of copper and are easily marketable to criminals. Steen Buss, a technical consultant at Nordic Wind Consultants, which is part of Green Power Denmark, does not know how big a problem cable theft from wind turbines is. He therefore appeals to other wind turbine owners to inform Nordic Wind Consultants or Green Power Denmark if they have been subjected to similar burglaries in their wind turbine.

- Only in this way can we shed light on the extent of the problem. There is no doubt that many older wind turbines are not well secured against burglaries, because there is a lack of surveillance, and the lock on the door is easy to break open. You can never be 100 percent secure, but you can discourage potential criminals with a better locking system and possibly camera surveillance, says Steen Buss.

Steen Buss points out that the time factor is crucial to whether criminals will succeed in their venture. Therefore, it should be made as difficult as possible to commit burglaries. He also encourages wind turbine owners to make sure that they are covered by their insurance in the event of theft.
