The number of electric cars in Denmark is increasing rapidly, and in 2023 the increase was 78 per cent. However, it also creates a need for greater charging capacity, and it places demands on the electricity grid. It has, among other things, the electricity grid company Zeanet, which owns and operates the electricity grid in large parts of Slagelse Municipality - including at Halskov, which lies next to the motorway and the tollbooth at Storebæltsbroen had to take note.
Because of the location near the Storebæltsbroen, many electric car owners make a short stop to charge the batteries. This has created a need for increased capacity on the electricity grid in the area of Halskov, as the electricity grid is not built to be able to handle the many additional lightning chargers that will be built in the coming years.
Therefore, Zeanet now has a major expansion of the electricity grid on the drawing board. Work therefore begins this summer with the construction of 5-6 new transformer stations and a new main station at Tårnborg in Halskov. When the new substations and lightning chargers are built, the total performance for the area at Halskov will grow from the current 6-8MW to approx. 26-28MW.
In order to ensure optimal operation of the many new transformer stations, Zeanet has also entered into dialogue with the municipality to find an area for the construction of a new advanced switching station.
- The development and the need for higher capacity has gone much stronger than expected, which is of course positive. It naturally also creates some challenges for us, as the development is happening at a pace we have not experienced before, says Henrik Adelsten, operations manager at Zeanet.
Future-proofed
When the project is completed at the end of 2025, the power supply will be more than tripled compared to today. This leaves the area at Halsskov with an electricity network capacity that should last many years into the future, says Henrik Adelsten:
- What the future holds for new energy-intensive activities at Korsør and Halskov is difficult to predict. However, with the planned expansions of the electricity grid, we should be guaranteed a stable, high power supply in the area of Halsskov for the next several years into the future.
