Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) is looking at the possibility of relaxing the rules for the ban on nuclear power in Denmark with "open eyes".

She answers this when directly asked if she is ready to look at relaxing the ban on nuclear power.

- Yes, I think we should look at it with open eyes. It is better that we have nuclear power in Europe than that we are dependent on Russian gas, says Mette Frederiksen.

The Prime Minister explains that "there are Danish companies that are looking at whether it is possible to create new types of nuclear power in different ways".

- I don't think we should oppose that in any way, she says.

However, the Prime Minister states that we have not had nuclear power in Denmark, and that it "takes many years to build, in addition to the challenges surrounding waste".

She also highlights the need to strengthen renewable energy by setting up even more offshore wind turbines.

Mette Frederiksen states that she has "no problem" with other countries having nuclear power.

- It is better that we have nuclear power in Europe than that we import oil and gas from Putin, she says.

Nuclear power has been a forbidden territory in Denmark for 40 years.

In 1985, the Folketing decided that the technology could not be included in the Danish energy planning

Government parties ready to abolish ban

The other two government parties, the Moderates and the Liberals, announced in April that they were ready to abolish the ban on nuclear power in Denmark.

Blue parties such as the Liberal Alliance, the Conservatives and the Danish People's Party are also in favor of abolishing the ban.

The Social Democrats have historically been against nuclear power on Danish soil.

Personally, Mette Frederiksen has said on previous occasions that Denmark should not work to promote nuclear power.

Instead, she has emphasized that the world should focus on renewable energy sources such as wind and solar energy.
