It was received with applause in the hall when the world's countries adopted a new climate finance target for developing countries' climate fight on Sunday night. But shortly afterwards, the Indian representative in the hall took the floor. And Chandni Rainavar was not satisfied with the agreement that had been adopted. Not at all.
- We do not accept the climate finance target in its current form, it was said, followed by applause from other dissatisfied countries in the hall.
In her opinion, the document is nothing more than an "optical illusion" that will not solve the problems facing the country. The new target of at least 300 billion dollars per year must be reached by 2035, and the rich countries must take the lead in finding the money from both public and private sources.
At the same time, all countries are urged to ensure that it ends up at at least 1.3 trillion dollars. dollar - but that is only a call.
India is very unhappy that the committed amount does not end up closer to 1.3 trillion dollars, as was hoped by developing countries.
- The amount proposed to be mobilized is abysmally low. It is a paltry sum, India continues.
Other countries such as Nigeria and Bolivia also expressed dissatisfaction with the agreement. The EU's climate commissioner, Wopke Hoekstra, sees it differently. He believes that COP29 will be remembered as the start of a new era for climate finance.
- We have worked hard with all of you to ensure that significantly more money is put on the table. We are tripling the target of 100 billion. dollars, and we feel that it is ambitious, it is necessary, it is realistic and achievable, he says according to The Guardian.
The UN Secretary-General had hoped for more
If you ask the UN climate chief, Simon Stiell, no countries got everything they wanted in the agreement.
- We are leaving Baku with a mountain of work that still needs to be done. So this is not the time for victory laps, he says in a comment according to AFP.
It is the same tone from the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres.
- I had hoped for a more ambitious result - both in terms of finance and mitigation - to meet the great challenge we face, he says in a statement.
But it can be a motto for the UN that this agreement is better than no agreement.
- This agreement provides a foundation to build on. It must be fully and on time. Commitments must be quickly turned into cash, the UN summit added.
